African Violets – Moving and Growing Under Fluorescent Grow Lights

For over a year my African violets were kept in a large East window. There were leaves a plenty but no blooms. Last November I moved 25 plants to my basement to grow them under fluorescent grow lights and I wish you could see the buds and blooms and the healthy crisp foliage, which is what we all want in an African violet. I find that violets, like most plants that bloom, do like some sun, but not so they are burned.

A friend has a very large violet she keeps in the southern window over a sink. It is a beauty and is full of blooms at all times. She is not one to fuss over plants. If they live with an average watering that is their good luck.

I use one 1/4 teaspoon of liquid fertilizer to one quart of water, and after transplanting the plants do not have that washed out look, but come right along much faster.

I notice that violets and gloxinias both do not like to be moved, and if one uses a plant food, the directions on the package should be followed carefully.

Good luck to violet and gloxinia growers. I love these plants and think they are well worth the best of care.
